Snapshot

  • Media company: AZFamily, KTVK (3TV) and KPHO (CBS 5)
  • Market size: Large market (Phoenix, DMA #12)
  • Sponsor: ProHVAC, under the First Alert Weather brand
  • Format: "Guess the day" prediction contest
  • Product: Audience Experiences
  • Prize: $5,000

The Challenge

Weather is a TV station's most-watched franchise and one of its hardest to monetize. Everybody checks the forecast, but almost nobody gives anything back for it. AZFamily wanted to turn its highest-attention window, peak summer heat coverage, into website traffic and first-party data. It also wanted a promotion that grew out of the news rather than one bolted onto it.

The Strategy

Viewers guessed the calendar day the Valley would first hit 110°F, for a chance at $5,000. ProHVAC sponsored the contest under the station's First Alert Weather brand.

The mechanic works because the event is both uncertain and eagerly anticipated. Phoenix's first 110° day typically lands around June 11, but the actual date swings widely: 2025's came on June 14, and the earliest on record is May 8. Nobody knows the answer, everyone has an opinion, and the answer arrives on a specific day. That gives the contest a built-in ending.

How It Worked

  1. Promote inside existing weather coverage. No new production was needed, just the forecast segments already on air.
  2. Viewers pick a date and submit an entry with an email opt-in.
  3. Confirmation emails send entrants back to the site. Each one was built as a traffic driver, not a receipt.
  4. The contest resolves itself the moment Sky Harbor records 110°.

What Each Side Got

The sponsor: a category fit that's hard to beat, an HVAC company attached to the hottest day of the year. ProHVAC also got presence inside the station's most-watched franchise, association with the First Alert Weather brand rather than a generic contest, and entrant data backed by local email opt-ins.

The media company: 44,761 entries, 5,369 new email opt-ins and 21,567 new website visitors. All of it came from a sponsor-funded promotion that ran inside coverage the station was already producing.

Why It Worked

The prize was small. The relevance was total. $5,000 is modest for 44,761 entries. The entries came from the question, not the money.

Confirmation emails did double duty. AZFamily built them to drive traffic, and they account for a meaningful share of the 21,567 new visitors. Most stations treat the confirmation email as an afterthought, but it is free inventory pointing at your own site.

A self-resolving contest creates natural urgency. Nobody needs a deadline reminder, because the weather sets it.

Sponsor fit did real work. An HVAC advertiser on a heat contest isn't just a placement; it's the whole idea. That fit is what makes the contest renewable every summer.
